Yup, it’s that time of year again; the cold has made it’s way to the Pickled household…and it sucks! Especially when your kids have asthma (see post about Why I Vaccinate) . Here are a few cough and cold remedies I use to make my kids feel more comfortable. As always, you should consult with your doctor and seek professional medical advice when your kids are sick, and exercise caution when trying a new remedy. The following is intended for informational purposes only and is not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Keto Diet Update #1

My keto diet has not been going according to plan. First it was the birthday cake, then it was Christmas shopping with the hubby which ended at a Chinese restaurant. I love Chinese food! You would think that something I love so much, wouldn’t be bad for me. On the contrary! I started this keto-ish diet about two months ago at 193 pounds. I am now 190. I’ve been re-gaining and re-losing the same 3 lbs for 2 months now! I’m a weekday dieter and a weekend splurger, stuck in a vicious cycle. When will I be able to swing that other leg up onto the diet-wagon? (see previous post)…

    My Weight Loss Struggle

Weight gain has been the bane of my existence ever since my first pregnancy where I started at a lovely 140 lbs, and ballooned to a whopping 200 lbs! I never made it back to 140. In fact, with every subsequent pregnancy I gained more, and after 4 pregnancies I weighed 230 lbs. I spent all of my 20’s obese, and it seemed as though I’d be spending my 30’s that way too. I Watch Oprah Lose Weight I so desperately wanted to lose weight, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t know the first thing about calories, had no clue what cardio was, and I didn’t have the internet…

    My Dog Has Fleas!

The horror! I can’t believe I’m even writing this but, my dog has fleas! and now so does my house. I am pretty sure this is what a mother feels like when she finds out her kids have head lice. I feel like such a slob (not that any mother should feel this way). Chico, our chihuahua Flea Nightmare This nightmare began a couple of months ago when my kids were waking up in the mornings with mysterious, itchy bite marks. I had spotted a few mosquitoes in the house and quickly attributed the bites to that, although secretly I feared the worst. But a few days ago my daughter announced at…

    Why I Vaccinate

I have 4 kids and they are all vaccinated…but they haven’t always been. When I had my first 3 kids I didn’t know anything about anything. I was told when to bring them to the doctors office to get their shots, and that’s what I did. I never questioned it. I didn’t even know vaccinating was optional (somehow, medical professionals forget to mention that part). (photo by Pixabay) My first child was healthy, apart from the childhood ear infections, and the occasional flu or cold. Child #2 was a different story. He developed asthma and allergies; we were constantly in and out of the hospital with him. Baby #3 was…

    Homeschooling Begins

“What was I thinking?! Why didn’t I send them on the bus? Woe is me!” Those were my thoughts Tuesday morning; the 1st day of school here in Ontario, and our 1st day back at homeschooling. My high schoolers were on their computers, trying to figure out their classes. My 4th grader was explaining to me why he doesn’t need to know his 8x tables. And my 2nd grader forgot how to read! I even had to help him write his name! I truly must be nuts to think that I can do this another year. Homeschooling has begun, and you’re probably wondering, “Why put yourself through such misery?” Well,…

    Camping at Pinery Provincial Park

Pinery Provincial Park. A place to play. A place to relax. A place to make friends. We have just returned from our 4 day camping trip at the Pinery. Last year was our first time camping here and we loved it so much, that we had to visit again this year. I was a little nervous about going this time though, because, instead of booking a site for a 30 ft trailer, I booked one for an 18 footer. But, luckily I am married to a former truck driver (a.k.a professional backer-upper of large objects) and he was able to maneuver our trailer onto our site with room to spare!…

    15 Best Homeschooling Tips

Homeschooling can seem like scary thing. But trust me, if I can do it so can you. So, whether you’re already a homeschooler, or you’re still trying to figure out if you should be, here are my 15 best homeschooling tips! 1. Start school at the same time everyday, preferably at 9 a.m. Kids can think clearer in the morning and there is less opportunity to start that Lego creation or video game; which equals less complaining about starting school work. 2. Don’t worry about the state of your home. School first, clean later. 3. Don’t compare your homeschooling family to other homeschooling families. As long as they learn to…
